Material characterization studies were conducted to analyze the chemical and physical properties of pozzolanic cement. The principle objective of this research was to determine whether pozzolanic cement is a suitable material for permanently encasing high-level radioactive waste (HLW) and spent-nuclear fuel (SNF) in disposal canisters. This particular cement was produced by mixing lime or portland cement with volcanic tuff, a natural pozzolanic material extracted from Yucca Mountain, Nevada; Portland-pozzolan and lime-pozzolan mixtures were created, analyzed and tested for compressive strength.
