Research investigating executive function is difficult in two different ways. First, executive function has only recently evolved into its own field of study, and unlike the fields of personality or intelligence, it therefore does not have a wide body of prior research to draw upon. The second difficulty follows from this limited knowledge base. The many different approaches to the study of executive function have given a diverse set of ways to define and operationalize it, leading to numerous contradictions in the literature.
