This dissertation examines the early-successional plant communities that spontaneously establish on brownfields, former industrial sites that remain vacant due to the presence of contaminants, with a comparison to old-field plant communities on former agricultural sites. Brownfields are common in urban areas including most of the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Though these sites are a major component of the landscape in areas with history of industry, their ecology has not been extensively studied in North America. Some brownfields remain in early stages of succession for decades, structurally resembling the vegetation of formerly agricultural old fields less than 20 years since abandonment.
