Idle Hands

My mother was a quilter. Her quilts were not the traditional wedding ring or pinwheel designs; they were utilitarian but also pretty and unique. She made her quilts by hand using any and all kinds of fabric, mostly scrap material obtained through years of working at a dress factory. After retirement, her hands were never idle. When she died our family discovered even more beautiful quilts that she had left behind. I have always sewn but often talked about wanting to learn to quilt, so, as a gift, my daughter enrolled me in a basic quilting class where I learned to quilt using a sewing machine. This quilt is a result of what I learned in that class. It is aptly named Idle Hands, in reference to an essay my daughter wrote in which she tied together three generations of creativity: my mother's quilting, my sewing, and her writing.
