Begun by Peter Benedictus (Mobarak) and continued by Stephen Evodius Assemani, the great Roman edition of Ephrem’s works, based on Vatican manuscripts, was the result of the first major effort to publish the famous Syrian’s literary remains in large number. Volumes 1-3 contain the Syriac works with Latin translation, and volumes 4-6 contain works in Greek (and a small number in Latin) attributed to Ephrem, these too with Latin translation. This edition laid the foundation for further editions and translations of Ephrem’s works in Syriac by Overbeck, Bickell, Lamy, and others.
