In 1870, homeowners on Livingston Avenue opposed the construction of the first high school because they wanted to maintain a strictly residential community. By 1875, the battle had been lost and the first high school was dedicated on May 4, 1876. This extremely ornate Italianate structure served as the city's high school until 1914, when the new high school was built. It was demolished c. 1930 to build the Roosevelt Junior High School. Livingston Avenue Baptist Church: formed as an outgrowth of the First Baptist Church on George Street, this congregation began searching for a site to erect a church in May 1872. Under the direction of Reverend A. E. Waffle, a site was selected on Remsen Avenue near Redmond Street. The new church was dedicated in 1873, but by 1890 the congregation had grown considerably and it was time to move again. The old church became the Masonic Hall, and a new $49,500 edifice was built at the corner of Livingston Avenue and Welton Street. The building was dedicated officially as the Livingston Avenue Baptist Church, which remains to this day. (Images of America New Brunswick)Chas Tamm
