In 1870, homeowners on Livingston Avenue opposed the construction of the first high school because they wanted to maintain a strictly residential community. By 1875, the battle had been lost and the first high school was dedicated on May 4, 1876. This extremely ornate Italianate structure served as the city's high school until 1914, when the new high school was built. It was demolished c. 1930 to build the Roosevelt Junior High School.
