A sole-source aquifer (SSA) is defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) under regulations in the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974. It is defined as an aquifer which contributes more than fifty percent of the drinking water to a specific area and its contribution would be impossible to replace if the aquifer were to become contaminated. Any project within such a designated area that receives federal funds must address the project's potential impact on ground water to the satisfaction of the USEPA. This 'project-review area' includes all or part of the 'stream-flow source zone,' the upstream watershed that may contribute recharge to the aquifer.
