Protected Open Space Inventory, February, 1992

The Open Space Inventory serves as a beginning tool to establish a system for protecting natural resources such as buffer zones for surface and ground water, scenic vistas, local character, agricultural productive lands, wildlife habitat, recreational sites, etc. The base map of protected open space allows a planner to visualize what areas have been preserved indefinitely, as well as for a short period of time. It also highlights possible linkages of open space that could enhance natural resource area. The project examines the need to consider the planning of open space protection for the future as opposed to letting the current trend of sprawling development continue. This trend causes concern that the existing villages and hamlets will lose their natural features and character. Goals must also be set for the type of open space that the municipality needs or wants - active or passive.Funded by a matching grant from the Department of Environmental Protection, Office of Environmental Services and the Califon Borough Environmental Commission
