At the beginning of the 20th century Catholics of the Eastern rite lived in Hungary under the jurisdiction of dioceses whose administrative and liturgical character was Ruthenian (Rusyn or Ukrainian) or Romanian. Many Hungarian-speaking coreligionists came to regard this situation as anomalous, and in 1910 the Hungarian government took up their cause for a new Hungarian diocese. Why Austro-Hungarian officials and those of the Holy See circumvented normal channels to support this initiative, and disregarded protests by the Romanians, is the focus of this study. It is based on new research in Hungarian and Austrian archives.American Catholic Historical Associatio
