With the goal of protecting a major source of drinking water for New Jersey, as well as important habitat, the Highlands Law, which was signed by the Governor on 8/10/2004, affects 88 municipalities in 7 counties, dividing the 800,000 acre Highlands region into a Preservation Area (398,000 acres) and a Planning Area (402,000 acres). This document lays out the development and goals of a Highlands Region Master Plan, which is required by The Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act.
