The authors investigated, by means of model aerosols, the status of the lungs of 27 dental technicians. The results were compared with the corresponding data of a group of normals. The aerosol methods consisted in: 1) inhalation of pulses or boli of half-micron aerosols (70 cm**3) and determination of the dispersion of such aerosol pulses in expired air as function of the lung depth; and 2) inhalation of monodisperse radio-aerosols of 5 mu m aerodynamic diameter and determination of the regional deposition in the extrathoracic, tracheobronchial and alveolar region of the respiratory tract. The results obtained with the aerosol methods are compared with clinical lung function tests
