Ozonolysis is one of the main pathways for degradation of alkenes in the atmosphere, where the reaction is associated with smog formation1 and the haze that often occurs over forests2,3. In recent decades, ground-level ozone concentrations have greatly increased4,5. The possibility of significant damage to plants by ozone and its products has consequently been raised in discussions of ‘waldsterben’, the large-scale dying of trees in northern Europe and North America6–9. With particular regard to the formation of peroxides, we have used 13C- nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to investigate the water-soluble products of the gas-phase ozonolysis of isoprene and several terpenes, which are emitted into the atmosphere in large q...
Besides isoprene, monoterpenes are the non-methane volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with the highes...
Terpenes are emitted by vegetation, and their oxidation in the atmosphere is an important source of ...
Quercus ilex (L.) leaves emit monoterpenes, particularly α-pinene, β-pinene and sabinene. Apart from...
The ozonolysis of alkenes is considered to be an important source of atmospheric peroxides, which se...
In an attempt to identify new mechanisms for the generation of oxidants during fall and winter, we c...
Monoterpenes are volatile organic compounds (VOC) that are emitted into the atmosphere from biogenic...
H2O2 has two faces in plants: it is toxic at low concentrations in the chloroplasts, and it is a nec...
TERPENES AND ISOPRENE ARE EMITTED FROM CONIFERS AND DECIDUOUS TREES IN RATHER IMPORTANT QUANTITIES...
Reactions of the hydroxyl (OH) and peroxy (HO2 and RO2) radicals play a central role in the chemistr...
It is well established that organic peroxides are formed by OH-radical-induced oxidation of hydrocar...
We conducted a laboratory investigation to identify highly-oxidized organic compounds formed in sesq...
It has been postulated that secondary organic particulate matter plays a pivotal role in the early g...
Ozone is the primary precursor of OH. OH is a very strong oxidant and will immediately oxidize of al...
