The use of radioisotopes of iodine in the diagnostic and therapy of thyroid diseases is among the oldest procedures in nuclear medicine. In this work a biophysical compartment model specific for the biokinetics of iodine in patients suffering from autonomous functioning thyroid nodule was developed. It is based on biokinetic data collected in 43 patients during clinical routine treatments. With this model an optimized measurement schedule for treatment planning was developed. Absorbed doses to the diseased tissue during therapy were calculated and verified with a Monte Carlo simulation. The outcome of the treatment was compared to the dose to evaluate the success of the therapeutic procedure
