Background: Chronic pain is pain which persists beyond the normal physiological healing timeframe. It affects up to 20% of the Australian and New Zealand populations. Chronic pain is also costly, not only in terms of healthcare costs, but also in lost work days and decreased productivity. Surgery is one of the leading causes of chronic pain, highlighting the need to understand and prevent the transition from acute to chronic post-surgical pain. This study has documented the onset and development of subacute pain and the development of chronic pain.
