The gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons, located within the hypothalamus of the mammalian brain, have been established as the key output cells mediating all influences that control fertility, conveyed by the central nervous system. Gonadotropins (luteinizing hormone; LH and follicle stimulating hormone; FSH), secreted by the pituitary in response to hypothalamic signals from GnRH neurons, stimulate the release of gonadal steroids from the ovaries.
