Martin Luther has justifiably been termed the “Father of Evangelical Hymnody” because he brought back the singing of hymns in the Western church. In Luther’s time the mass was performed in Latin, a language which the lay people did not comprehend. The music was exclusively sung by trained choirs and the clergy. Luther was convinced that the lay people should sing their praises to the Lord and their faith would be strengthened
