Length-Weight Relationships and Coefficients of Condition of Four Species of Fish from the Saline and Smoky Hill Rivers, Ellis County, Kansas

Samples of red shiners Notropis lutrensis (Baird and Girard), sand shiners Notropis stramineus (Cope), stonerollers Campostoma anomalum (Rafinesque) , and plains killifish Fundulus kansae Garman from the Saline and Smoky Hill rivers of Ellis County , Kansas , were analyzed for age and growth information . Length-frequency histograms, which give an indication of growth rates, were similar for fish of the same species, but red shiners lived to a greater age in the Saline River. Red shiners and sand shiners had significantly different length-weight regression slopes between rivers. Fish from the Saline River had slightly higher coefficients of condition. Comparison of this study to previous investigations indicated greater growth rates for sand shiners and plains killifish than previously reported
