Variations of the Human Form in Clay Slab Form

The figure as a subject for this thesis was arrived at through a growing process of work previously done. Before I began using the recognizable subject of the figure I went through a stage of using slab cylinders which represented or gave suggestions of humans in small groups. From this I tried to make more detailed recognizable figures in small groups. I did not like the results and moved on to single human forms in larger proportions which became the subject of my research. The first figure forms were blocky and hard. (“Reclining Woman”) Using exaggerations and various positions of the human body, especially the female, allowed me to express inner feelings and attitudes about myself and society.
