Objective. The major objective of this study was to examine the risk and protective factors associated with smoking behavior among a cohort of pregnant and parenting teens. Methods. Data were analyzed from the Multi-Site Parenting Adolescent Initiative (PAI) study that was designed to reduce repeat pregnancy and welfare dependence among pregnant or parenting adolescents aged 13 to 18 who were enrolled or likely to become eligible for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Approximately 2,300 adolescents were recruited into the study in ten sites representing eight states. Four waves of data were collected over an 18-month period.
