Nickel/sapphire (single crystal $\alpha$-aluminum oxide) was used as a model system for an in situ study of metal-ceramic interfaces under controlled conditions. The interface was prepared in ultra-high vacuum (UHV) by depositing nickel onto a sapphire substrate with control of initial starting surface and reaction environment. X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Reflection High-Energy-Electron Diffraction (RHEED) were used to monitor simultaneously chemical composition and reaction at the interface, as well as structure of the growing nickel film on the sapphire.
