A study of the movement of female priests into positions of leadership and power within The Diocese of Pennsylvania between 1974-1986

Recently, there has been an influx of women into the ordained ministry in Western non-Catholic churches. Many women who have served the church in lay capacities now seek ordination. They want leadership roles which offer legitimate authority and opportunities for decision making. This movement of women into the ordained ministry reflects wider changes in American society towards the status of women in the work force. In the Episcopal Church, where women have been ordained for fifteen years, many remain in entry level, low salaried or part-time positions. They have limited access to the same opportunities for leadership and authority as their male colleagues. This study investigates contemporary aspects of female leadership in the Episcopal Church. Using a survey and model case studies as a framework, the background, experiences, roles, leadership functions, authority, concerns and aspirations of women priests in The Diocese of Pennsylvania were examined. Additional information gathered from interviews with the clergy and laity, provided insight into other attitudes and perceptions regarding the roles and responsibilities of clergywomen as well as expectations for their future status within the Church structure. Research results show most women are employed in parish ministry. They exercise little to moderate authority. They desire future positions which offer higher status and greater authority. There are specific obstacles which operate within the Church to hinder female advancement. A notable barrier is gender discrimination. There are also factors which function as facilitators. The most significant is the advocacy of affirmative action policies by Church officials. Episcopal women are demonstrating their competence in the ministry. As they gain greater exposure and recognition, it is believed that they will be offered opportunities to assume significant and varied positions in Church leadership and authority
