The Saint Wolfgang Altarpiece is one of the last fifteenth-century carved and painted altarpieces still intact and in its original location. Its contract as well as a large number of theological writings, letters, and other historical documents from the commissioning monastery are also extant. Because of this extraordinary situation, it is possible to study the relationship between this major monument of late-mediaeval art and its specific context. This study is the first attempt to approach the monument from this point of view.
