Mosses are small avascular bryophytes with a haploid dominant gametophyte and a diploid sporophyte stage. The gametophyte cells are single layered and lack a protective cuticle, which is the first line of defense in vascular plants. These factors would render them highly susceptible to stress but on the contrary, mosses have flourished on land for the past 450 million years with tolerance to both abiotic and biotic stress. Occurrence of unique lipids in bryophytes was considered as an adaptive means to survive harsh terrestrial condition.
