In a country characterized by a low human development and precarious living conditions, this paper analyzes the determinants of child mortality in Niger from the Demographic and Health Survey of 2006. On the one hand, individual factors such as education and age of the mother have a positive effect on the variability of the risk of infant and under-five mortality. On the other hand, the control by household variables – ethnicity, geographic location, standard of living – indicates that the incidence of child mortality is very high in the poorest regions of the country where the reproduction and sexuality questions are particularly governed by traditions and customs reluctant to use modern sanitary methods.
