Folklore scholarship and folklore materials offer unique insights into community life and individual behavior. But despite outstanding work by researchers and practitioners, the field of folklore has not secured its deserved place, in either the academy or public policy, as a primary discipline possessing knowledge and understanding unavailable to other fields. Drawing upon a thirty-five-year career in nonprofit management, government service, and university teaching, this address will search out the underlying themes that give a folkloristic perspective special value, giving special attention to those ideas that can build consensus and commitment among folklorists in order to advance the discipline in the academy and in the larger world.Le...
