Middleton’s City comedies were originally performed in widely diverse settings: A Chaste Maid in Cheapside was originally played in 1613 at the Swan by professional actors, whereas A Mad World, My Masters was first performed in 1605 on an indoor stage, and by a children's acting company. After four centuries of quasi-oblivion, both plays were revived, in the late 1990s, at the new London Globe Theatre. The unexpected success of these productions has shown that the thatch-roofed replica of the Shakespearean open air playhouse, with its authentic thrust stage and standing audience, is a most appropriate medium to convey how vital and dynamic Jacobean comedy remains today
