D’Othello à Otello : les avatars du Maure

Ce texte est celui d’une conférence prononcée devant des amateurs d’opéra. Il explore les adaptations de l’Othello de Shakespeare pour la scène lyrique. Il retrace l’histoire du mythe shakespearien, envisage l’échec dramatique (mais le succès considérable de l’Otello de Rossini) et s’attarde sur la composition de l’Otello de Verdi. Il s’interroge enfin sur l’étrangeté du personnage principal qui donne toute sa force continuée au mythe.This essay is the text of a talk given to opera buffs. It provides a study of the adaptations of Shakespeare’s play for the opera. It traces the history of the Shakespearian myth, it develops the dramatic failure (but the operatic success) of Rossini’s Otello, and devotes most of the analysis to the composition of Verdi’s Otello. Finally, it questions the strangeness of the main character where lies the enduring appeal of the myth
