The upsurge of nationalism in China since the 1990s has attracted considerable interest in academic circles. It has come about against the background of the frustration of political modernization (democratization) in China as a result of the June Fourth incident. These historical circumstances have prompted further debate over the relationship between democratization and nationalism. An interesting question for Chinese liberals committed to constitutional democracy is how to respond to nationalism.
