The results obtained by infrared spectra of CO and NO coadsorption and volumetric measurement of oxygen chemisorption reveal that reduction of Mo sites was promoted by ruthenium to produce a large amount of coordinatively unsaturated Mo sites on Ru-Mo/Al2O3 and Ru-Co-Mo/Al2O3 catalysts in the pretreatments involving reduction and sulfidation. Accordingly, a model of hydrogen spillover has been formulated to account for the Ru function. One of the crucial steps in the model is that Ru metal dissociates H-2 to provide a source of H atoms, which then migrate onto Mo sites to take part in surface reaction
