Quality management has a strong tradition in medicine because of its special responsibility to society. In Germany, medical schools began addressing issues of didactics at a relatively early date, developing new approaches to quality assurance in teaching and concepts for reforming medical education. However, due to the licensing regulations for doctors (Approbationsordnung für Ärzte, ÄAppO), which took effect in 2002, and the current structural changes in university clinics and hospitals, the new B.A. and M.A. study programmes have been met with little interest.
