One of the main hallmarks of reform initiatives in undergraduate medical education is the introduction in the curricula of teaching communication and social skills. In this respect, new educational goals are to be defined and appropriate teaching methods as well as adequate examination procedures have to be developed. Following the publication of a German Consensus Statement (Basel Consensus Statement) we report the results of a survey of 32 medical curricula in German-speaking countries, conducted from January 2008 to February 2009.
