Diocles of Carystos (350 BC), and Celsus, First Century Christian Era, are examples of physicians of ancient and mediaeval times, who were cognizant of the problems associated with gastric and duodenal ulcer (40). These and a multitude of physicians to follow were perplexed by the origin of such problems, and to this day the pathogenesis defies exact scientific foundation. Gastric and duodenal physiology is a continuing source of investigation by experientors and clinicians, alike, to crystalize further knowledge on this alteration in the normal process of digestion.
