This essay focuses on the use of reminiscence to assist the older adult in adapting to the biopsychosocial changes that occur with aging. The theoretical and empirical literature on reminiscence during the second half of life is reviewed. In general, the literature suggests reminiscence to be a developmental phenomenon that serves an adaptive function through the assessment and evaluation of past life events. Included in the theoretical review is a brief exploration of growth and development parameters pertinent to reminiscence. Generated from the literature review are suggestions for future investigation and nursing implications to revive interest, self esteem, and personal relationships in the older adult
