The Effect of Ultra-Violet Radiation on the Velocity of Esterification of Various Aliphatic Alcohols and Acetic Acid Both with and Without Hydrochloric Acid As a Catalyst

In recent years a great deal of research has been done on the effect of light on chemical activity, special attention being paid to ultraviolet light as one of the more active forms. Much of the concentration on the ultraviolet light as one of the more active forms. Much of the concentration on the ultraviolet was doubtless due to the comparative ease with which this form of radiant energy can be produced, and also due to the relation of ultraviolet light to photosynthesis in the plant. An inspection of the literature reveals that most of the research involving the action of ultraviolet light on organic compounds deals with the synthesis of sugars and starches. However, little work has been done on the study of specific organic reactions outside the field of polymerization and condensation. The particular reaction chosen for this investigation was that of esterification, stress being laid on the effect of the ultraviolet on the velocity of the esterification reaction. The study is of interest in that the reaction without radiation has been well investigated, thus presenting a good basis for comparison. Another reason for the choice of this subject lies in the fact that, unlike many organic reactions, the analysis of the esterification reaction is both simple and rapid
