p26 is a small heat shock protein/-crystallin, and it serves as a molecular chaperone within Artemia franciscana during diapause. E. coli strains transfected with p26 possess a higher resistance to heat than native strains. A heat shock screen of E. coli transfected with A. franciscana DNA was developed in an attempt to isolate genes of small heat shock proteins other than p26. Two genes were isolated and selected to undergo further characterization
