Transcranial magnetic stimulation is a burgeoning field of medicine currently under study exploring its therapeutic and diagnostic applications. One such study at the Massachusetts General Hospital concerns a patient who had a seizure while undergoing TMS treatment for medication-resistant depression. The purpose of this Major Qualifying Project was to create an accurate model of the patient from T1 and T2 magnetic resonance imaging data using a complex toolchain of medical imaging and mesh processing software. ANSYS Maxwell was used to conduct a finite element analysis of the patient’s unique cranial geometry to calculate the electric field inside the cortex during a simulated TMS procedure.
