Ecosystem services are the conditions and processes through which natural ecosystems, and the species that make them up, sustain and fulfill human life. Ecosystems provide society with services that stretch far beyond just raw materials. Ecological economists assign monetary values to these services in order to estimate the economic value of an ecosystem.
