Latinos account for 16.3 percent (50.5 million) of the total U.S. population, for more than half of the total growth of the U.S. population in the last decade (Humes, Jones, and Ramirez, 2011), and halting, and in some cases reversing, the gradual population decline in pockets of rural America (Kandel and Cromatie, 2004).
