Enhancing the operational life and reliability of drivetrain components via heat treatment routes is a long-studied topic of research. By varying parameters using heat treatment, the resulting attributes of the material such as hardness, residual stress, amount of retained austenite (RA), microstructure, grain size, grain orientation etc. can be varied. While the effect of hardness and residual stress on the resulting tribological properties of the steel is well known, the effect of RA is not as clearly understood yet.
