Disaster Doesn\u27t Plan Ahead but You Can

An emergency is described as an unexpected event that requires action to prevent further risk. In emergency situations, it is difficult to take action as one simply just might not know what course of action to take therefore it is important to be educated on emergency preparation and safety guidelines ahead of time for different situations such as active shooter, earthquakes, fires etc. As a student, for the past five years at Cal State San Bernardino, I have not witnessed any emergency simulations including the active shooter and earthquake drills. It is particularly alarming because there are many other students who have said the same. The purpose of this project is to study emergency preparation and safety guidelines in the university to promote a campus culture that recognizes the importance of students, faculty, staff, and administration being educated and equipped to act accordingly. This research will examine student’s knowledge of emergency preparation and the availability of campus resources and the manner in which they are communicated. Recent events such as the December 2nd, 2015 shooting at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, the gunshot on CSUSB’s campus on January 10th, 2018 as well as the proximity of the campus to the San Andreas Fault line; have contributed to the need for safety guidelines to be readily available and implemented to ensure the safety of the campus since not everyone knows how to act in case of emergency
