I engaged in a meta-synthesis in which I collected data about apathetic students and their lack of engagement in critical discussion. A “meta-synthesis” is a process whereby I sifted through an abundance of relevant data as to discover themes conducive with effective facilitation of dialogue. An “apathetic” student shows lack of concern, interest, and/or enthusiasm for material. In other words, my research project addressed the research question: How do university faculty facilitate a critical dialogue in higher education, particularly in the large classroom (lecture-hall) setting?
