Si bien las técnicas convencionales han contribuído sustancialmente al mejoramiento de las especies forrajeras, la aplicación de diferentes biotecnologías en los últimos 15 años ha redundado en importantes progresos, especialmente en lo que se refiere a calidad de forraje. En este trabajo se describen los aportes de las herramientas biotecnológicas para ampliar la variabilidad genética como el cultivo de tejidos, la variación somaclonal, la hibridación somática y la transformación, la utilidad de los marcadores moleculares para la selección de caracteres agronómicos complejos y el rol de la genómica para la identificación de genes de interés para los cultivos forrajeros.
