Humanity expresses itself in an incomprehensible myriad of way, yet within our society, the educational system has but only a few marrow formats in which to allow the student to demonstrate, let alone express, their knowledge of a given subject (Godlberg, 1992). This paper examined the issue of art as a means to assess learning within a fourth grade social studies class. The purpose of this project was to examine how art is utilized in a a fourth grade classroom and how students are assessed of their work. Using the tools of observation and interview, I concluded that art, when utilized with other academic formats, can be a viable means to assess learning for students with lower academic capabilities
