Hayek draws the general lines of an analysis of economic knowledge in taking up two different directions. On the one hand he draws his attention on the knowledge used by the agents in the course of the economic process; on the other one he seeks for the theoretical knowledge required to explain the observed economic processes. In looking for epistemic micro-foundations for economics, he is paradoxically led to do away the individual choice theory from economics, and to concentrate the purpose of economics on the problem of pure coordination.
