Blockchain : the new Internet?

The purpose of this study was to clarify and gather knowledge on what exactly the technology Blockchain is and how it has been implemented in various fields in the modern world. During the year 2017, Blockchain became a buzzword and its erroneous usage, created a misleading image mostly due to the misinformation and unawareness of the society regarding this new tech-nology. As Blockchain is a rather recent topic, the majority of the data and information for this study was collected through hours of extensive research online. De-spite the fact of a high abundance of online resources, the information gath-ered needed to be cross-checked with other resources as part of the infor-mation were incorrect. For the technical side of this study, books related to pro-gramming in Solidity language and online tutorials were explored as well. The codes available in this study were programmed to demonstrate the technicali-ties of Blockchain in a simplistic way. The study shows that Blockchain has indeed potential to become an important aspect of our lives by reinforcing data security and by giving more power to the society. Throughout the study only the main aspects and feature of Blockchain were analyzed. With more time in hand, it would have been interesting to have conducted a short questionnaire to people, after a small briefing about the technology, to see what the general idea about Blockchain was.Opinnäytetyöni tarkoitus on selventää, selittää ja kerätä tietoa Blockchain-teknlogiasta. Mikä oikeastaan on Blokchain? Miten sitä on hyödynnetty eri aloilla tähän mennessä? Vuoden 2017 aikana Blockchainista tuli muotisana ja sen virheellinen käyttö loi harhaanjohtaviakin käsityksiä tästä teknologiasta. Virheellisen tiedon ja harhaanjohtavien käsitysten leviämisen mahdollisti myös yhteiskunnan heikko tietämys tästä uudesta teknologiasta. Blockchain on aiheena melko uusi, joten suurin osa opinnäytetyötä varten kerätystä tiedosta on kattavan verkossa olevan tiedon tutkimisen tulosta. Blockchainista on verkossa runsaasti tietoa, mutta kaikki tieto on tarkastettu ja verrattu toisiin lähteisiin, koska osassa lähteistä on saatavilla virheellistä tietoa. Opinnäytetyön teknisempää osuutta varten lähteinä käytettiin myös Solidity-ohjelmointikirjoja ja verkko-oppaita. Oman ohjelmoidun koodin avulla demonstroitiin yksinkertaisesti Blockchainin teknologiaa. Opinnäytetyön tulosten mukaan Blockchain-teknologiassa on potentiaalia tulla merkittäväksi osaksi elämäämme vahvistamalla tietoturvallisuutta ja antamalla enemmän valtaa yhteiskunnalle. Tässä opinnäytetyössä analysoitiin vain Blockchain-teknologian pääpiirteitä ja -ominaisuuksia. Tulevaisuudessa olisi mielenkiintoista tehdä myös kyselytutkimusta, jossa selvitettäisiin ihmisten yleistä käsitystä Blockchain-teknologiasta
