Influenza is an almost universal respiratory viral infection which worldwide is reported to be responsible for 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness, and about 250,000 to 500,000 deaths per year. A systematic review I contributed to (Appendix #1) suggests an incidence of influenzaassociated influenza-like illness (ILI) of at least 1650 to 23400 (median 10180) per 100,000 globally per year. This indicates a substantial ongoing burden which is potentially amenable to vaccination strategies.
