This study investigates the social status of the Huaqiao, the ethnic Chinese community, in Korea from legal, economic and socio-cultural perspectives. To explore the socio-cultural status of the Huaqiao, their education, cultural identity, social recognition and relationships with local people are examined. The main purpose of this study is to clarify and interpret the interrelation between the social status of the Huaqiao, Korean government policies and the responses of mainstream society. For this purpose, the crucial issues regarding Korean government policies and their significant impact on the Huaqiao community are revealed.
