This paper reports on research on successful active fire protection systems. The fire incidents with fire alarm activations that were assessed for the purpose of this study are derived from the New Zealand Fire Service (NZFS) web-based incident data reporting system, which is integrated with the overall station management system (SMS) and incident numbers and reports are automatically generated for all incidents that the NZFS attends [1]. The active fire protection systems analysed in this study are automatic and manual fire detection / alarm systems and automatic sprinkler systems, which are elements of the alarm section in the incident reports.
