Social science research on matters to do with the Antarctic is few and far between, particularly compared with the natural sciences. The research that has taken place is dominated by psychological studies into the effects of living in stressful environments such as prolonged isolation in small groups and in situations of confinement and deprivation. Social science research is carefully prescribed by controllers and gatekeepers – namely Governments and their agencies and Antarctic’s natural science community.
