Colic syndrome is one of the most important problems of equine health, considering that damage to the intestinal barrier can lead to systemic inflammatory response syndrome, which can progress to sepsis. A significant consequence of sepsis is myocardial dysfunction. The aim of this study was to noninvasively evaluate the effects of endotoxemia and hence of sepsis related to colic syndrome using conventional two-dimensional echocardiography and tissue Doppler echocardiography on left ventricular indices, namely systolic and diastolic functions, in horses subjected to obstruction of the descending colon.
